GMB@Tayside Contracts Members Cost of Living Crisis Survey Results

FAO: GMB Tayside Contracts Members

30th March 2022

Dear TC Member

Thank you for completing our Cost-of-Living questionnaire. We’ve had an incredible response.

One quarter of you receive in work benefits to top up your income, which means you are not paid enough for the work that you do. It’s as simple as that. The fact that so many of you have part time or term time posts is something that can and should be addressed. We know that part time or term time working suits some of you, but it should be a choice. If you would prefer more meaningful contracts, then these should be available for all.

One quarter of you have advised us that your pay is wrong regularly. This isn’t good enough. Can we please encourage you to speak to your local rep to discuss these issues to see if this can be resolved? If you are already on low pay, then wrong wages from month to month will seriously affect your ability to heat your home and feed you and your families.

93% of you are worried about rising energy prices and a large majority of you, 77% have told us that the cost of living has or is having a negative impact on your mental health.

73% of you want a pay increase at least in line with RPI. You can achieve this if you participate in the votes, whether they are in your workplace, online or in the post. Employers will only listen if a large majority of you vote and are prepared to take action. You are the Union and you are the ones with the power. Any formal ballot for industrial action has to by law take place through the post.

76% of you do not feel valued by your employer which is something that we may try to explore further with you.

We will be raising these issues with your employer, however where there are specific matters please do get in touch with your rep or contact GMB Dundee office on 01382 225491.
