GMB Dundee SOS – Save our Swimming Lessons.
Leisure and Culture Dundee currently offer swimming lessons for children and adults on a seven day basis. This is to be reduced to a four day program at the end of October 2019.
This is a stealth cut to public services across the City of Dundee. Learning to swim is a vital life skill for every person to embrace.
Access to this type of learning should not be restricted by short sighted cuts to public services and Swim Teacher jobs. Dundee once had a massive Learn to Swim program with swimming lessons being available at most local High Schools.
Breaview, Craigie and Menzieshill to name but a few all had very successful community based programmes that Leisure and Culture Dundee have cancelled over the years.
Grove Academy and St. Paul’s Academy still have their own lesson program. But this will be reduced further restricting access to an already oversubscribed service.
With large existing waiting lists along with the cancellation of all swimming lessons at Lochee Sports Centre. Leisure and Culture Dundee should maximise their existing Learn to Swim program instead of reducing it to a handful of days per week.
Good quality and affordable swimming lessons should not be an aspiration. But should instead form an integral part of our cities fabric when it comes to leisure and sport activities.
Let’s not sit back and allow these cuts to happen without public consultation. Instead have your said today by signing our petition!
If you agree that we should retain a seven day program of lessons. Then please sign our petition to ensure that the citizens of Dundee have access to the best services possible based at Grove Academy and St. Paul’s Academy.
We all need to remember that Leisure and Culture Dundee also recently closed Camperdown Golf Course. Let not allow them to cut our children’s swimming lessons and in the process protect our members jobs.
Lets send a clear message that Dundee wants to keep its seven day swim lesson provision. Allowing more investment, less barriers and greater participation.
